3.1/5

A tidy four-tool shortcut for naming a song and its key, resting entirely on a free web service whose operator its privacy policy does not name.

What is Song Finder MCP?

Song Finder MCP is a small stdio server that passes requests to the free songfinder.dev web service. identify_song names a track from a YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, SoundCloud, Bilibili or X link, a direct media URL or a local audio file; search_tracks looks up titles and returns ISRC codes; get_track_analysis returns tempo, musical key, Camelot code, compatible keys and energy and mood scores; find_similar_tracks suggests tracks, optionally limited to harmonically compatible keys for DJ sets.

It is MIT-licensed TypeScript, published on npm as songfinder-mcp 0.1.0 and as a Docker image for amd64 and arm64. The repository was created on 15 August 2026 and has had no commits since that day; it has 4 stars and about 59 npm downloads in the last month.

How to install Song Finder MCP

npx -y songfinder-mcp

Is Song Finder MCP worth it?

The tools are well chosen for one audience: DJs and producers who want key and tempo without opening a separate app. get_track_analysis returns BPM, key, Camelot code and the adjacent compatible keys, and find_similar_tracks with harmonic set to true filters suggestions to those keys. The README's sample, Blinding Lights at 171 BPM in Camelot 3B, mixing with 3A, 2B and 4B, shows the shape of the output. Tempo is cross-checked against a second provider, and the tool says so when the two disagree by more than about 3 BPM, which usually means one read the track at half or double time.

All of the work happens at songfinder.dev. The client sends a fixed X-SongFinder-Client header to get past the site's bot challenge, so a change on either side breaks every call; the maintainers' own smoke test runs against the live API for that reason. Recognition is rate-limited per IP, local uploads are capped at 10 MB, and the README warns that live versions, remixes and re-uploads often fail or come back credited to the wrong artist.

The privacy position needs reading before use. Local files are uploaded to songfinder.dev, which according to its policy, updated 25 August 2026, passes the clip to ACRCloud, AudioTag or Shazam and does not keep it afterwards. The policy names no company or country behind the service, the website runs Google Analytics and AdSense, and training use is not addressed. The Docker image, with a read-only mount, at least limits what the server can reach on your machine.

With 4 stars, a single 0.1.0 release and no commits since launch day, this is a convenience for personal music libraries rather than something to build a product on.

Where it earns its place

  • A wedding DJ preparing a two-hour set

Find tracks that mix cleanly into a client's first-dance song

Ask for the song's analysis, then call find_similar_tracks with harmonic on to get candidates in adjacent Camelot keys. Free; check each suggestion by ear, as coverage of long-tail releases is uneven.

  • A video editor at a small social-media agency

Name the track behind a TikTok or YouTube clip before licensing it

Paste the link and let identify_song return title, artist, label and ISRC. Treat the credited artist with care: re-uploads can match a white-label record, so confirm with search_tracks.

Before you commit

Setup
One line in Claude Code (claude mcp add songfinder -- npx -y songfinder-mcp) or the same npx command in other clients; Node.js 20 or newer. The Docker image needs -i and a mounted folder for local files.
Integrations
Four tools: identify_song, search_tracks, get_track_analysis and find_similar_tracks. Links from YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, SoundCloud, Bilibili and X; files in mp3, m4a, wav, flac, ogg, opus, aac or webm.
Data and privacy
Links and uploaded clips go to songfinder.dev, which sends audio to ACRCloud, AudioTag or Shazam and says it does not retain it. The site uses Google Analytics and AdSense; operator and training use are not published.
Limits
Recognition is rate-limited per IP; uploads are capped at 10 MB; the similar-tracks endpoint allows about one call every 3 seconds. Live versions, remixes and regional releases often have no match or no analysis.
