What it is
Base44 builds working web apps from a description. Every app comes with a backend: a database, user login, file storage, analytics and hosting, so you do not have to wire up separate services. Wix bought the company in 2025; Calcalist reports that earn-out payments have taken the total price past $150 million.
Plans run on two kinds of credits: message credits for talking to the AI builder and integration credits for things your app does, such as sending email or calling an AI model. The free plan has 25 message credits a month and up to 5 apps. Paid plans billed yearly are Starter $16/month, Builder $40, Pro $80 and Elite $160. In the second quarter of 2026 Wix added Base 1, its own language model, to the Base44 chat to cut inference costs.
Our review
Base44's pitch is that everything is already connected, and for a non-technical builder that is the whole sale. Other AI builders often ask you to set up a separate database or login service; according to the pricing page, Base44 includes authentication, a database, storage, analytics and hosting on every plan, including free. That removes the step where most first-time builders get stuck.
The credit split is worth understanding before you pay. Message credits cover building and integration credits cover what the finished app does. Starter's 100 messages a month suits a small tool, not heavy iteration; Builder at $40 billed yearly raises that to 250 and is also the first tier with model choice and two-way GitHub sync, which is the only published way to take the full source code elsewhere. The pricing page mentions no credit top-ups; when you hit the limit, the stated option is to upgrade.
The data terms deserve more attention than they get. Base44 holds SOC 2 Type II and ISO 27001 certification, but its own documentation says that on all plans except Enterprise, including Business, workspace data can be used to train AI models, with no opt-out setting. The Enterprise exclusion explicitly covers personal information that people submit through your app's forms, which implies that on lower plans it is not excluded. App data is stored in the US by default, with EU or UK residency only on the enterprise tiers, and SSO is Enterprise only. A client portal collecting customer details on Starter is a different risk from an internal to-do list.
The business behind it is spending heavily to grow. Wix reported a $76.4 million net loss for the second quarter of 2026, with sales and marketing up 67%, and Calcalist reports Base44's gross margin started the year near break-even, with Wix expecting about 60% in the second half once Base 1 cuts inference costs. Credit allowances are the obvious lever if those targets slip, so prices that look generous now are not guaranteed.
Where it earns its place
An operations manager at a 25-person logistics firm
Replace a shared spreadsheet with an internal job-tracking app with logins
Describe the app, iterate in chat and publish on the built-in backend; Starter at $16 a month billed yearly covers 100 messages, which suits a single tool. Because staff data may be used for training below Enterprise, keep sensitive fields out of it.
A freelance developer building client portals
Ship small apps quickly while keeping the code portable
Builder at $40 a month billed yearly adds model choice and two-way GitHub sync, so the full source lives in the client's repository. The backend still runs on Base44, so moving off it means rebuilding auth and data.
A product lead at a regulated fintech
Prototype a customer-facing onboarding flow
Fine for a prototype with dummy data. Real customer details need Enterprise, the only tier where workspace and form data are excluded from training and where SSO and EU or UK residency are offered, at a price set by sales.
Before you commit
- Setup
- Sign up and describe the app; the first working version, with login and database, comes from the first prompt. Custom domains and in-app code editing start on Starter.
- Integrations
- Built-in auth, database, storage and analytics; two-way GitHub sync from Builder; integration credits pay for app actions such as sending email or calling AI models. Third-party services bill you separately.
- Data and privacy
- SOC 2 Type II and ISO 27001, AES-256 encryption. Workspace data, including form submissions, can be used for AI training on every plan except Enterprise; data is stored in the US unless an enterprise tier moves it to the EU or UK.
- Cost at scale
- Elite costs $1,920 a year for 1,200 message and 50,000 integration credits a month; beyond that the published route is Enterprise at a custom price. Yearly billing is a 20% saving on the monthly price.
- Limits
- Message credits cap how much you can iterate each month, and integration credits cap what a live app can do. The backend is Base44's own, so apps cannot be self-hosted from the published plans.
What's good
- Database, login, storage and hosting included on every plan
- Free plan allows up to 5 apps
- Unlimited apps and custom domains from the $16 Starter plan
- SOC 2 Type II and ISO 27001 certified
- Two-way GitHub sync exports full source code from Builder up
What's not
- Workspace data can be used for training on every plan below Enterprise
- Two separate credit types make costs harder to plan
- Model choice and GitHub sync require the $40 Builder plan
- SSO and EU or UK data residency are enterprise-only
- No credit top-ups listed; running out means upgrading
Best for
Non-developers and small teams who want internal tools or simple apps with logins and data, without setting up a backend.
