What is Claude Cowork?
Claude Cowork is the part of Claude that does work rather than talks about it. You point it at folders and connected tools, describe the outcome, and it plans the steps, works through files and apps, and returns a document, spreadsheet or slide deck for review. It launched on 12 January 2026 for Max subscribers and reached Pro four days later.
On 16 September 2026 Anthropic merged chat and Cowork into one Claude: every conversation starts as chat and switches to Cowork when a task involves files. Since 6 October 2026 new Cowork tasks on Pro, Max and Ultra run on Anthropic's servers rather than your computer, so scheduled jobs keep going with the laptop shut. Local folders are reachable only while the desktop app is open.
It comes with every paid Claude plan and draws on the same usage allowance as chat and Claude Code. Connectors, plugins, a built-in browser and computer use, still in beta, extend what it can reach.

Is Claude Cowork worth it?
The Monday report is rarely hard. It is the forty minutes of opening five spreadsheets, copying figures into a deck and fixing the chart labels that eats the morning.
Cowork does that kind of job end to end. You give it a folder, a connector such as Google Drive or Microsoft 365, and a plain description of the result. It shows each step as it goes, splits big jobs into parts that run at the same time, and hands back a Word file, a spreadsheet or a deck. Anthropic's own examples are weekly marketing decks, spreadsheet reconciliations and a first pass over contracts against a playbook.
Scheduling is what turns it from a clever chat into a colleague. A task can run daily, weekly or monthly with nobody watching, and since 6 October 2026 new tasks on Pro, Max and Ultra run in the cloud, so they finish after you close the laptop. The September merge also means you no longer choose between chat and Cowork; Claude switches when a job touches files.
The catch: the cloud move is one-way. Anthropic's help centre says there is nothing to set up and you cannot switch back; anyone who wants work kept on their own machine is pointed to Claude Code instead. Local folders stay on your computer, but Claude fetches copies of the files a task needs, and a cloud session can reach them only while the desktop app is open. Computer use, where Claude clicks and types on your screen, has no sandbox between Claude and whatever is visible, and Anthropic says the risk of a hidden instruction in a web page hijacking a task is still not zero.
The meter is the other problem. Cowork shares the plan's allowance with chat and Claude Code, and Anthropic says it uses limits faster than chat because it runs sub-agents and many tool calls. Anthropic publishes no task counts, so a $20 Pro plan that comfortably covers chat can run dry on a few long Cowork jobs.
Data terms depend on the plan. On Pro, Max and Ultra, whether your conversations train Claude follows the "Help improve our AI models" setting; on Team and Enterprise they are not used for training. Enterprise owners must switch on cloud Cowork themselves, and can send activity to security tools through OpenTelemetry.
Our take: Cowork is worth its usage on the jobs you do every week and would happily never see again. It is a poor fit for anything you would not email to a contractor, because that is roughly what you are doing.
Where it earns its place
A marketing manager at a 30-person agency
Build the Monday performance deck from last week's exports
A weekly scheduled task reads the analytics exports in a connected Drive folder and drafts the slides before she arrives. On Pro at $20 a month a long weekly job plus daily chat can reach the limit, so Max at $100 is the safer plan.
A finance lead at a 12-person e-commerce business
Reconcile the payment processor report against the accounting export each month
Cowork compares the two spreadsheets, lists the mismatches and writes a summary sheet. Keep it on Manual approval and a dedicated folder with backups, since it can edit files directly.
An in-house lawyer at a 150-person software company
Get a first pass on supplier contracts against the company playbook
On a Team plan, where work is not used for training, Cowork marks clauses that depart from the playbook and drafts the redlines for a lawyer to check. Team Standard seats cost $20 a month on annual billing.
Before you commit
- Setup
- Sign in to a paid Claude plan on web, desktop or mobile and describe a task; Claude switches into Cowork when files are involved. Install the desktop app for macOS, Windows or Linux (beta) to connect local folders.
- Integrations
- Connectors such as Google Drive, Microsoft 365 and Amplitude, Slack on Team plans, plugins that bundle skills and connectors, local MCP servers through the desktop app, a built-in browser and computer use in beta. It can also run through Amazon Bedrock, Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform or Microsoft Foundry.
- Data and privacy
- On Pro, Max and Ultra, training follows the "Help improve our AI models" setting. Team and Enterprise data is not used for training. Deleted tasks are removed from backend storage within 30 days; through the Compliance API, local session transcripts are kept 6 years by default and cloud sessions have no default retention period. Which AI tools train on your data?
- Cost at scale
- A 20-person team on Team Standard seats pays $400 a month on annual billing, with Premium seats at $100 for heavy users; Enterprise adds usage at API rates on top of the $20 seat fee.
- Limits
- No published task or message counts; Cowork draws down the shared allowance faster than chat. Cloud sessions lose access to local files when the desktop app closes, and computer use is unavailable on Linux.
