What is Claude Developer Platform?
The Claude Developer Platform is Anthropic's offering for developers: the Claude API, the Claude Console at platform.claude.com for keys, billing and testing prompts, and the client SDKs. You pay per token for Claude Fable 5.1, Opus 5.5, Sonnet 5.5 and Haiku 5.5, all with a 1M-token context and 128K-token output.
Beyond the Messages API it runs server tools such as web search, web fetch and code execution, a Batch API, a Files API, and Claude Managed Agents, a hosted agent harness in beta that runs Claude in a cloud sandbox for long tasks. The same models are also sold through Amazon Bedrock, Claude Platform on AWS, Google Cloud and Microsoft Foundry.
On 21 October 2026 Anthropic released API version 2026-10-21 with new major SDK versions, and moved the SDKs from the MIT licence to Apache 2.0.
How much does Claude Developer Platform cost?
| Plan | Price | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| Claude Fable 5.1 | $10 / $50 per 1M tokens | |
| Claude Opus 5.5 | $4 / $20 per 1M tokens | |
| Claude Sonnet 5.5 | $2 / $10 per 1M tokens | |
| Claude Haiku 5.5 | From $0.10 / $0.50 per 1M tokens |
Pay per use. Per 1M input/output tokens: Fable 5.1 $10/$50, Opus 5.5 $4/$20, Sonnet 5.5 $2/$10, Haiku 5.5 from $0.10/$0.50. Batch half price; US-only inference 1.1x; web search $10 per 1,000; Managed Agents $0.08 per session-hour plus tokens.
Is Claude Developer Platform worth it?
Feeding a model a whole contract, codebase or year of support tickets is where API bills usually jump, because many providers charge more once a prompt gets long.
Anthropic does not, for most of its line-up. Fable 5.1, Opus 5.5 and Sonnet 5.5 bill the full 1M-token context at the standard rate, so a 900K-token request costs the same per token as a 9K one. Prices run from Haiku 5.5 at $0.10 per million input tokens to Fable 5.1 at $10, with Opus 5.5 at $4 and $20 and Sonnet 5.5 at $2 and $10. Cache reads on Opus and Sonnet cost 5% of the input price, and cached tokens do not count towards your input rate limit, which makes repeated long prompts cheaper and faster than the list price suggests. Haiku 5.5 is the exception: prompts over 100,000 tokens move to $0.50 and $2.50.
The platform also runs more of the agent for you than most. Web search costs $10 per 1,000 searches, code execution is free when used with web search or fetch, and otherwise each organisation gets 1,550 free container hours a month. Managed Agents, still in beta, runs Claude in a hosted sandbox with bash, files, web access and MCP for $0.08 per session-hour plus tokens.
The catch: the spend caps are hard stops. The Start tier allows $500 a month, Build $1,000 and Scale $200,000; reach the cap and every request fails until midnight UTC on the first of the next month, with no retry-after header, unless you ask for more. The API also changes fast. The October release brought new major SDK versions with breaking changes, Sonnet 5.5 arrived with five breaking changes of its own, and many useful features sit behind dated beta headers.
The data terms are good but have exceptions. Anthropic says retained data is never used for training without your permission, and zero data retention is available per organisation through sales. It does not cover the Console, Managed Agents, whose transcripts persist until you delete them, or Fable 5.1, which requires 30-day retention. Fable output also carries a text watermark.
Our take: for a product built on Claude this is the best-run API of the three big labs; for one that wants to switch models next quarter, the parts that make it good are the parts you cannot take with you.
Where it earns its place
A legal-tech start-up reviewing merger documents
Ask questions across a 600-page data room without chunking it
Send the documents to Opus 5.5 in one 1M-token request and cache them; follow-up questions read the cache at $0.20 per million tokens instead of $4, and cached tokens do not count against the input rate limit.
A platform team at a SaaS company
Run nightly agents that triage bug reports and draft fixes
Managed Agents hosts the sandbox and agent loop, with scheduled deployments on Claude Platform on AWS; the bill is tokens plus $0.08 per session-hour, but transcripts are kept until you delete them, so add a clean-up job.
A finance lead at a 30-person company on the Build tier
Stop a runaway script from taking the product offline
Set workspace spend and rate limits below the $1,000 organisation cap, because hitting the cap pauses every workspace until the first of the next month.
Before you commit
- Setup
- Sign up at platform.claude.com, add credit and create an API key; the Python or TypeScript SDK makes a first Messages call in minutes, and the Console workbench tests prompts without code.
- Integrations
- Client SDKs in Python, TypeScript, C#, Go, Java, PHP and Ruby plus the ant CLI; web search, web fetch, code execution, computer use, Files, Batch and MCP; Bedrock, Google Cloud, Microsoft Foundry and Claude Platform on AWS.
- Data and privacy
- Retained data is never used for model training without your express permission. Zero data retention is enabled per organisation by sales and excludes the Console, Managed Agents and Fable 5.1; flagged content can be kept for up to 2 years. Which AI tools train on your data?
- Cost at scale
- Batch halves every price and stacks with caching; US-only inference adds 10%; Opus 5.5 fast mode costs $8 and $40 per million tokens. Max, Ultra and Team Claude plans include monthly API credits.
- Limits
- Opus 5.5 on the Start tier allows 4,000 requests, 2M input and 400K output tokens a minute; monthly spend caps are $500, $1,000 and $200,000 by tier, with custom terms above that.
What’s good
- Full 1M context at standard price on Fable, Opus and Sonnet
- Cache reads at 5% of input on Opus 5.5 and Sonnet 5.5, outside the rate limit
- Managed Agents runs hosted sandboxes for $0.08 per session-hour
- 1,550 free code-execution hours a month per organisation
- Same models on Bedrock, Google Cloud, Foundry and Claude Platform on AWS
What’s not
- Claude models only
- Spend caps stop all traffic until the next month
- Breaking SDK and model changes arrive often, behind dated beta headers
- Managed Agents and the Console are outside zero data retention
- Fable 5.1 requires 30-day retention and watermarks its output
Best for
Teams building on Claude who want long context, prompt caching and hosted agents from the model maker itself.
