What is OpenAI API?
The OpenAI API is how developers use OpenAI's models from their own software. You send text, images or audio to the Responses or Chat Completions endpoints and pay for the tokens, minutes or images you use. There is no subscription.
The current lineup has four flagship text models that share a 1.05M-token context and 128K-token output: GPT-6 Astra, GPT-6.1 Sol, GPT-6.1 Terra and GPT-6 Luna. Around them sit GPT-Image models, realtime voice models such as GPT-Realtime-2.1 and GPT-Live 1, transcription, and security and life-science models for approved organisations. Hosted tools include web search, file search, code containers and computer use.
OpenAI also ships ChatKit for chat interfaces and the open-source Agents SDK. Agent Builder, the hosted Evals platform and reusable prompt objects shut down on 30 November 2026.
How much does OpenAI API cost?
| Plan | Price | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| GPT-6 Astra | $10 / $50 per 1M tokens | |
| GPT-6.1 Sol | $2 / $10 per 1M tokens | |
| GPT-6.1 Terra | $1 / $5 per 1M tokens | |
| GPT-6 Luna | $0.10 / $0.50 per 1M tokens |
Pay per use, no subscription. Per 1M input/output tokens: GPT-6 Astra $10/$50, GPT-6.1 Sol $2/$10, GPT-6.1 Terra $1/$5, GPT-6 Luna $0.10/$0.50. Batch and Flex half price; Fast mode about 2x; web search $10 per 1,000 calls; regional processing 10% extra.
Is OpenAI API worth it?
Building on someone else's model means two bills you cannot fully see coming: the per-token price, and the cost of rewriting your code when the vendor retires a feature you relied on.
The OpenAI API is the developer side of OpenAI. Your software sends text, images or audio, and you pay for what you use. The lineup is unusually tidy right now. Four flagship models share a 1.05M-token context and step down in price: GPT-6 Astra at $10 per million input tokens and $50 per million output, GPT-6.1 Sol at $2 and $10, GPT-6.1 Terra at $1 and $5, and GPT-6 Luna at $0.10 and $0.50. Transcription costs $0.0045 a minute, and the GPT-Live 1 voice model $0.05 a minute.
The levers matter more than the list price. Batch and Flex halve the bill for work that can wait. Fast mode roughly doubles it, and Ultrafast on Astra and Sol costs about six times the standard rate. A prompt over 272K input tokens pays double for input and 1.5 times for output on the whole request, not just the excess. Web search adds $10 per 1,000 calls on top of the tokens it pulls in.
The data terms are sound by default. OpenAI says API data has not been used for training since 1 March 2023 unless you opt in, and abuse-monitoring logs are kept for up to 30 days. Zero data retention exists, but only after OpenAI's sales team approves it. Responses are stored for at least 30 days unless you set store to false, and conversation objects stay until you delete them. Data can be kept in the US, Europe or the UAE, at 10% extra for models released since 5 March 2026.
The catch: OpenAI retires things quickly. In 2026 it removed the Assistants API on 26 August and switched off the Sora 2 video models on 24 September, six months after announcing it. Agent Builder, the hosted Evals platform and reusable prompt objects go on 30 November. Self-serve fine-tuning is closing too: from 6 January 2027 no customer can start new jobs.
New accounts also start small. The free tier caps spending at $100 a month, and you need $500 in total credit purchases to reach the Grow tier and its $200,000 monthly ceiling.
Our take: as a place to call models, the OpenAI API is as good as any; as a place to build your whole agent stack, treat everything except the models and the Responses API as rented furniture.
Where it earns its place
A two-person start-up building a customer-support inbox
Draft replies to support tickets cheaply at volume
GPT-6 Luna at $0.10 in and $0.50 out per million tokens handles routine replies; overnight backlogs go through Batch at half price, and only escalations go to GPT-6.1 Sol at $2 and $10.
An engineering lead whose product was built on the Assistants API
Keep the product working after the 26 August 2026 shutdown
Rebuild threads on the Responses and Conversations APIs, which OpenAI names as the replacement; conversation objects persist until deleted, so add a deletion job to match your own retention policy.
A data-protection officer at a European insurer
Keep claim documents processed and stored inside the EU
The eu. endpoint stores and processes in the EEA and Switzerland, at 10% extra on newer models, but needs approved abuse-monitoring controls and a signed Modified Retention amendment first.
Before you commit
- Setup
- Create an account, buy credit and an API key, and a first Responses call runs in minutes with the official SDKs; the account starts on the Free tier with a $100 monthly cap.
- Integrations
- Responses, Chat Completions, Realtime, Batch, image and audio endpoints; hosted web search, file search, code containers, computer use and remote MCP servers; ChatKit for chat interfaces and the open-source Agents SDK.
- Data and privacy
- API data is not used for training unless you opt in. Abuse-monitoring logs are kept for up to 30 days; zero data retention and modified abuse monitoring need OpenAI's approval; Responses are stored for at least 30 days by default and conversations until deleted. Which AI tools train on your data?
- Cost at scale
- Tier caps are $500 a month on Build, $5,000 on Launch and $200,000 on Grow (after $500 in total credit purchases); file-search storage is $0.10 per GB per day after 1 GB free, and code containers run from $0.03 per 20-minute session.
- Limits
- Astra, Sol and Terra get 5,000 requests and 1M tokens a minute on Build, rising to 15,000 and 40M on Grow; over 272K input tokens, input costs double and output 1.5x for the whole request.
What’s good
- Four flagship models from $0.10 to $10 per 1M input tokens, all with a 1.05M context
- Batch and Flex at half price for work that can wait
- No training on API data unless you opt in
- Text, image, realtime voice and transcription behind one key
- Data residency in the US, Europe and the UAE
What’s not
- Assistants API, Sora 2, Agent Builder and Evals all retired within 2026
- Self-serve fine-tuning closes to everyone on 6 January 2027
- Zero data retention needs sales approval
- Prompts over 272K tokens reprice the whole request
- New accounts capped at $100 to $500 a month until they buy more credit
Best for
Teams that want OpenAI's models behind their own product and keep their agent logic in code they control.
