Databricks Genie

Databricks' family of AI tools for asking data questions in plain English, building data agents and writing code.

3.9/5

For a Databricks shop Genie is close to free to switch on until January 2027, but anything you build on it should assume the bill arrives after that.

What it is

Genie is the AI layer of Databricks, the data and AI platform. Business users ask questions in plain English and Genie writes SQL against tables governed in Unity Catalog (Databricks' data catalog and permissions system), then returns an answer and a chart.

At the Data + AI Summit in June 2026, Databricks rebuilt the original AI/BI Genie into six parts. Genie One is the chat tool for business users. Genie Agents (formerly Genie Spaces) are curated question-answering setups for specific datasets. Genie Code, which replaced Databricks Assistant in March 2026, helps developers write code. The others are Genie ZeroOps, Genie Ontology and Genie App Builder.

It only works if your data is on Databricks. Genie One and Genie Agents are free to use until January 31, 2027 under a promotion, though the SQL warehouse compute that runs the queries is still billed.

Our review

Genie's real advantage is that it inherits work you have already done. Questions are answered from Unity Catalog tables under the same permissions, and the data sent to the model is filtered by those permissions, so nothing a user cannot already see goes into a prompt. There is no separate BI vendor to contract, connect or secure, and for a Databricks customer the cost of a trial is mostly the serverless SQL warehouse time the queries consume.

The pricing has been unsettled all year. Genie Agents moved to pay-as-you-go on 8 July 2026 with 150 free DBUs a month (about $10.50 in US East), human use of Genie One and Genie Agents was made free a week later, and on 3 August that free period was pushed to 31 January 2027. A one-off billing correction reversed charges already taken. Databricks has not said what the two products will cost after January, and since 24 September service principals, the machine identities you would use to embed Genie in an app, pay standard rates with no free allowance.

The data terms are better than most bolt-on assistants. According to Databricks' trust page, partner models (Azure OpenAI, OpenAI on Databricks, Anthropic on Databricks) run on zero-retention endpoints, an admin can switch partner models off in favour of Databricks-hosted open models such as GPT OSS, and the features respect Databricks Geos residency. Note the narrow wording on training: Databricks promises not to train foundation models it offers to third parties on your data, which is not the same as no training at all.

Accuracy still depends on curation. Genie Agents and Genie One run read-only SQL against what you attach, and since 17 September an agent uses only its explicitly attached sources, up to 50 per agent. Badly named columns produce confident wrong answers, so the data team ends up writing instructions and benchmarks before business users can rely on it. Compared with ThoughtSpot or Hex, Genie wins on governance and loses everywhere your data is not in Databricks.

Where it earns its place

  • A head of analytics at a retailer whose sales data already sits in Unity Catalog

Let 200 store and category managers answer their own sales questions

Set up a Genie Agent per domain with table descriptions, sample questions and benchmarks, then share it in Slack or Teams. Human use is free until 31 January 2027; the bill in the meantime is the serverless SQL warehouse time, and budget for an unknown per-use price after that.

  • A platform engineer embedding natural-language questions in an internal app

Call Genie from a service rather than the Genie One interface

The Agent mode APIs went GA on 27 August 2026, but calls made as a service principal are billed at pay-as-you-go rates with no free allowance. Set a Genie budget and assign Budget Viewer to the app team so the spend is visible.

  • A compliance lead at a healthcare company on Databricks

Allow assistant features on tables that hold patient data

Turn on the compliance security profile with the HIPAA standard and keep 'Enforce data processing within workspace Geography' on to stop cross-Geo routing. Partner models can be disabled entirely, which falls back to Databricks-hosted open models.

Before you commit

Setup
Enabled per workspace by an admin; a usable Genie Agent needs tables chosen, described and tested with sample questions before it is shared.
Integrations
Genie One has Slack, Teams, iOS, Android and a macOS beta; MCP connectors for Google, Microsoft 365, Atlassian, Slack and GitHub are GA; agents embed by iframe or the Agent mode APIs.
Data and privacy
Data sent to models follows Unity Catalog permissions; partner models use zero-retention endpoints; chats are stored AES-256 encrypted in the control plane; regulated data (PHI, PCI, FedRAMP) needs the compliance security profile.
Cost at scale
Until 31 January 2027 people use Genie One and Genie Agents free and pay only warehouse compute; Genie Code includes 150 DBUs per user per month ($10.50 in US East) with 25% off usage beyond that; service principals pay full rates.
Limits
Read-only SQL for Genie One and Genie Agents; 50 data sources and 200,000 conversations per agent; scheduled tasks at most daily; PDFs up to 100 pages.

What's good

  • Answers respect existing Unity Catalog permissions
  • Partner models run on zero-retention endpoints
  • Genie One and Genie Agents free for people until 31 January 2027
  • Slack, Teams, mobile apps and MCP connectors for Google, Microsoft 365, Atlassian and GitHub

What's not

  • Only works on data in Databricks
  • No price announced for after January 2027
  • Service principal (embedded) use is billed at full rates
  • Scheduled tasks capped at once a day
  • Needs curated tables and instructions to answer reliably

Best for

Companies already on Databricks that want business users to ask data questions in plain English.
