Our rating

4.4/5

For anything built from people talking, Descript turns a day of timeline work into an hour of editing a document.

What it is

Descript is a video and audio editor where you edit by changing text. It transcribes your recording, and deleting a word in the transcript cuts it from the video. It is widely used for podcasts, interviews, YouTube videos, courses and screen recordings, and includes remote recording rooms, automatic multicam and Zoom import.

Its AI features include Studio Sound (cleans up audio), filler-word removal, Eye Contact correction, green screen, AI voices and voice clones, clip creation, translated captions in 61 languages, dubbing in 30 and avatars. Underlord is an AI co-editor that carries out requests like 'tighten this and add captions', with a model picker that includes Anthropic's Claude Sonnet 4.5. An MCP connector lets Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor or a custom agent run the same edits from outside the app.

Plans are priced per person and include monthly media hours and AI credits: 10 hours and 400 credits on Hobbyist, 30 and 800 on Creator, 40 and 1,500 on Business. Annual billing saves up to 35%.

Our review

Descript's text-based editing is still the fastest way to cut down interviews, podcasts and tutorials, and Underlord now does much of the first pass. You can ask for rough cuts, clips, captions and fixes in plain English, choose which model handles the request, then adjust by hand.

The plans are generous with features and stingy with credits. Dubbing into 30 languages and captions in 61 are on every paid plan, not just Business, but Underlord, Studio Sound, Eye Contact and avatars all draw on the same AI credit pool: 400 a month on Hobbyist and 800 on Creator. Only Creator and Business can buy top-ups. Descript's own MCP page warns that automated editing gets through credits faster than editing by hand.

The MCP connector is the most useful recent addition for technical teams. An agent in Claude Code or ChatGPT can import a file, run any Underlord edit and export a transcript or a Premiere or DaVinci Resolve timeline. It cannot hand back an MP4 or import from a YouTube link, so a fully automated pipeline still ends at a share link.

Its limits show with visually complex projects. Colour, motion graphics and effects are basic next to Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve or even CapCut, and users on Reddit report slowdowns on long projects. For companies, data handling needs a closer read: the privacy policy says projects may be used to train Descript's models unless you turn off 'Share Data with Descript', while a recent Descript blog post calls that sharing opt-in. Training opt-out, custom retention, SSO and SCIM are written into Enterprise only, and Business stops at five seats.

Where it earns its place

  • A solo podcaster publishing two one-hour episodes a week

Cut filler, fix audio and pull social clips from each episode

Creator at $24 a month on yearly billing covers 30 media hours and 800 AI credits, enough for about eight hours of recording a month with headroom; heavy Underlord use is what runs credits down first.

  • A four-person B2B marketing team

Turn webinars into clips and localised versions for EU markets

Business at $50 per person per month on yearly billing is $200 a month for four seats, with shared Brand Studio templates, translation proofreading and 1,500 credits each. A sixth editor forces a move to Enterprise.

  • A developer-relations engineer automating tutorial videos

Have an agent rough-cut screen recordings and export captions

Connect the Descript MCP server to Claude Code, upload the recording, ask for filler removal, captions and an SRT export. It uses the plan's AI credits and ends at a share link, as MP4 export is not available through MCP.
