4.3/5

CapCut makes a phone-shot clip look like this week's TikTok faster than anything else, but its content licence and its owner are questions a brand's lawyer should answer before the marketing team does.

What it is

CapCut is a video editor from ByteDance, the company behind TikTok. It runs on phones, Windows, macOS and the web, and passed a billion downloads on Google Play in January 2025. In the US it now falls under the safeguards of the TikTok US joint venture, which closed in January 2026 with ByteDance keeping 19.9%. It is built for short-form social video: templates, trending effects, auto-captions, text-to-speech, background removal, keyframes and direct export to TikTok and other platforms.

Its AI tools include video generation with ByteDance's Seedance models (Seedance 2.5 and the cheaper Seedance 2.0 Mini). According to the pricing page, Pro includes 700 AI credits a month, enough for up to 240 seconds of 720p or 600 seconds of 480p video with Seedance 2.0 Mini, plus 1 TB of cloud storage. Ultra raises that to 11,997 credits, about 1,700 seconds at 720p, and adds exclusive AI features. Teams plans give each seat Pro's 700 credits plus a shared brand kit.

CapCut went offline in the US in January 2025 under the divest-or-ban law and returned to the app stores on 13 February 2025. It has been banned in India since 2020. Prices vary by region and the site shows final prices only after sign-in; the Canadian page lists Pro at CA$33.99 a month or CA$290 a year and Ultra at CA$109.99 a month.

Our review

CapCut is the default editor for a huge share of TikTok, Reels and Shorts creators, and it earns that spot on speed. Auto-captions, templates that track trends, beat sync and one-tap effects let a beginner produce something that looks current in minutes, on a phone or in a browser, and the free tier still covers basic editing on every platform.

AI generation is now a paid feature with a visible meter. Pro's 700 monthly credits buy at most four minutes of 720p Seedance 2.0 Mini footage, enough for B-roll and transitions, not for a video built from generated clips. Ultra's roughly 28 minutes at 720p costs more than three times as much in Canada, CA$109.99 against CA$33.99 a month. Seedance 2.5, the better model, is priced per second on top. Users on Reddit regularly complain about features moving behind Pro and about the gap between regional prices, and the site will not show a final price until you sign in.

The licence is the issue most reviews skip. CapCut's terms grant the company a worldwide, royalty-free, irrevocable and sublicensable licence to user content uploaded to its servers. When the June 2025 update drew attention to that clause, CapCut said the user-content section had not changed for years and that it has never claimed ownership of users' work, which is true and also the point: the licence was always that broad. Agencies handling client footage under exclusive deals have reason to keep raw material out of CapCut's cloud.

Politics remain a background risk rather than a daily one. The US ban in January 2025 lasted days, CapCut now sits under the TikTok US joint venture's data safeguards, and an Illinois class action over biometric data was largely dismissed in September 2025. India has blocked it since 2020. For a solo creator none of this changes the editing; for a regulated business it changes the procurement file, which is where Descript, Canva or Premiere Pro win without being better editors.

Where it earns its place

  • A solo fitness creator posting daily to TikTok and Reels

Turn phone footage into captioned vertical clips in under 20 minutes

Auto-captions, beat sync and a trending template do most of the work on the free tier; Pro at CA$33.99 a month in Canada adds premium templates and enough credits for short Seedance B-roll.

  • A three-person social team at a regional restaurant chain

Keep branded short videos consistent across locations

A Teams plan gives each seat 700 credits, 1 TB of storage and a shared brand kit. Because uploads fall under CapCut's broad content licence, the team keeps licensed music and talent footage out of the cloud.

  • A compliance lead at a UK financial services marketer

Decide whether staff may use CapCut for public social content

The assessment weighs ByteDance ownership, the irrevocable content licence and regional availability; a cautious policy allows it only for already-public material and routes client or confidential footage through Premiere Pro or Descript.
