What is Gemini in Chrome?
Gemini in Chrome puts Google's assistant in a side panel next to the page you are reading. It sees the current tab by default and up to 10 recent tabs you share, so you can ask it to summarise, compare products across sites, pull dates into your calendar or draft a Gmail reply. It also edits images in the browser with Nano Banana and connects to Gmail, Calendar, YouTube, Maps, Google Shopping and Google Flights.
Auto browse, launched on 28 January 2026, lets Gemini take over a tab and work through a multi-step task: comparing hotel prices across dates, filling a form from a PDF, adding items to a basket within a budget. It pauses for your confirmation before buying something or posting on social media, and can sign in with Google Password Manager if you allow it. Since 30 July 2026 Gemini's background agent, first called Spark and now Task, can use auto browse in your own desktop Chrome.
Gemini in Chrome works on Windows, Mac and Chromebook Plus when you are signed in, and on Android in the US. It has spread from the US to the UK, Canada, India, much of Asia-Pacific, Latin America, Africa and the Middle East, but not to the EU.
How much does Gemini in Chrome cost?
| Plan | Price | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| Free | Free | Side panel, tab sharing, Nano Banana image edits and connected apps |
| Google AI Pro | $19.99/month | Adds auto browse, in preview |
| Google AI Ultra | From $99.99/month | Higher usage limits |
The side panel is free with a personal Google account in supported countries; auto browse needs Google AI Pro ($19.99/month in the US) or AI Ultra (from $99.99/month). Workspace accounts get it when an admin enables it.
Is Gemini in Chrome worth it?
Most of the small jobs you would hand an assistant happen in a browser: comparing three hotel tabs, copying a date from an email into a calendar, filling in the same form you filled in last month. Copying text into a chatbot and back again is where the time goes.
Gemini in Chrome removes the copying. Click the Gemini button and a side panel opens that already sees the page you are on, plus up to 10 recent tabs you choose to share. You can ask it to summarise reviews across sites, find a time that works in your calendar, or turn a product page into a comparison table. For a free feature, that covers a lot of everyday help.
Auto browse is the bigger idea. On a Google AI Pro or Ultra plan you can hand Gemini a chore, such as filing an expense report or researching flights, and it works in its own glowing tab while you carry on. Google says it stops and asks before a purchase or a social post, and you can take over at any point. Since July Gemini's background agent can do the same in your own Chrome, with your logged-in accounts, which makes it more useful than a remote browser and gives it more to get wrong.
The catch: it is in preview and still flaky on the open web. Google labels auto browse a preview, and The Register noted that some websites are actively blocking AI agents, so a task that works on one airline can stall on another. Giving an agent your saved passwords also widens what a malicious page could try through prompt injection; Google says Chrome has defences, but the risk is new and real.
Think about the privacy defaults too. Your current tab is shared by default when the panel is open. Google's privacy hub says page content and URLs are sent to Google, website details go into your Gemini activity when Keep Activity is on, a sample of chats is read by human reviewers, and reviewed chats are kept for up to three years. Activity is auto-deleted after 18 months unless you change it. Work and school accounts are not used to train Google's public models, according to Google's Chrome Enterprise help. It is not available in the EU at all.
Our take: the side panel is a free upgrade worth switching on for anyone in Chrome; auto browse is worth $19.99 only if you have a steady list of web chores and are comfortable with Google seeing them.
Where it earns its place
A freelance consultant booking monthly client trips
Compare hotel and flight prices across several dates without twenty tabs
Hand the comparison to auto browse on AI Pro at $19.99 a month; it works in a separate tab and stops for confirmation before paying, so you approve the booking yourself.
A small online shop owner
Summarise competitor product pages and reviews
Open the competitors' pages, share up to 10 tabs with the free side panel and ask for a comparison table of prices, features and common complaints.
An IT admin at a 500-person company on Google Workspace
Decide whether to switch it on for staff
It is off until an admin enables it for users over 18; managed work accounts are not used to train Google's public models, while personal Gmail profiles on the same laptop follow consumer terms.
