What is Voiceflow?
Voiceflow is a platform for building AI customer service agents yourself rather than buying a finished one. Your team writes instructions in plain language, adds Playbooks for open-ended conversations and Workflows for fixed processes on a visual canvas, connects tools such as Salesforce, Zendesk and Shopify, and picks the AI model for each agent from providers including Anthropic and Google. Agents run on a web chat widget, phone numbers, SMS or any interface through the API, with separate development, staging and production environments and transcripts, evaluations and analytics. All of this runs on V4, a rebuild of the platform that Voiceflow says is now available to every user.
When the agent cannot help, the Live agent handoff step passes the conversation to Zendesk, Genesys, UJET, Kustomer or Dixa; ten more help desks, including Intercom and Salesforce Service Cloud, can be connected through a handoff API you host yourself. Phone calls can be forwarded to a number or SIP address.
Voiceflow was founded in Toronto in 2018 and says it has more than 3,000 customers, including General Motors, JP Morgan and Vodafone. It has raised $35M, most recently a $15M round led by OpenView in 2023 at a $105M valuation, according to BetaKit.
Is Voiceflow worth it?
Buying an AI support agent usually means renting someone else's. The vendor sets it up, the vendor tunes it, and when a policy changes you file a request and wait.
Voiceflow takes the other route. It gives your team the workshop: you write the agent's instructions in plain English, draw fixed processes such as a refund check on a canvas, connect it to your order system or CRM, and choose which AI model handles which job. The same agent can answer on your website, by text message or on the phone, and you test changes in a staging copy before customers see them.
Handoff is where it is most practical. When the agent gets stuck, it can pass the conversation to Zendesk, Genesys, UJET, Kustomer or Dixa, and the conversation can return to the AI once the person is done. Intercom, Salesforce Service Cloud and eight other help desks work too, but only through a small service your developers build and host against Voiceflow's handoff API, which the docs say plainly is not a native integration.
The proof is mostly Voiceflow's own. It claims more than 3,000 customers and over 1 billion agent messages, and its pricing page quotes a customer, Trilogy, saying AI fully solved 59% of 7,000 support tickets. On data, the security page lists SOC 2 Type II, ISO 27001, GDPR and HIPAA, says customer data is not used to train models, and says model providers run with zero data retention. SSO and private cloud hosting are Enterprise only.
The catch: you cannot work out the bill before talking to sales. Voiceflow's own fact page says it does not publish list prices, and the credit rate table in its docs did not show figures when we read it. The last public prices, from April 2025, started at $60 a month for 10,000 credits, with each extra editor at $50 a month, and credits did not roll over. Compare Intercom Fin, which prints $0.99 per resolved conversation, or Vapi and Retell, which publish per-minute phone rates.
Our take: Voiceflow is closer to hiring a builder's toolkit than a contractor. Sierra and Decagon build and run the agent for you; Voiceflow suits a team with someone who wants to own every reply, and who will budget time to maintain it as well as money to run it.
Where it earns its place
A CX operations lead at an online retailer on Zendesk
Answer order-status and returns questions on chat and hand the rest to agents
Build a Playbook that looks orders up through the Shopify tool and a Live agent handoff step into Zendesk with a conversation summary. Cost depends on message and model credits, for which Voiceflow publishes no current rates.
A contact-centre manager at a North American insurer
Take routine phone calls before they reach the queue
Provision a Voiceflow number in the US or Canada, or connect existing lines through Twilio, Vonage, Telnyx or SIP, and use Call forward to pass callers to a human line. One number per workspace is included; each plan caps simultaneous calls unless you buy an add-on.
A developer at a SaaS company on Intercom
Hand stuck conversations from the AI agent to the human inbox
Intercom is not a native target, so write and host a small service against the live agent handoff API and its webhook events. It works, but the connection is yours to maintain.
Before you commit
- Setup
- Agencies can start a free trial without a card; businesses go through a demo. The Free plan's one-time credit grant is for building and testing, not production.
- Integrations
- Tools for Salesforce, Zendesk, HubSpot, Shopify, Airtable, Make, Gmail and Google Sheets; API calls, JavaScript functions and MCP servers; web chat, phone via Twilio, Vonage, Telnyx or SIP, SMS, and a REST API for custom interfaces.
- Data and privacy
- SOC 2 Type II, ISO/IEC 27001:2022, GDPR, and HIPAA-compliant deployments, per Voiceflow. No training on customer data; zero data retention at model providers; runs on AWS and GCP. How long Voiceflow keeps transcripts is not published. SSO and private cloud hosting on Enterprise.
- Cost at scale
- Not published. A bill combines a plan fee, add-ons such as editor seats and phone numbers, and credits shared across workspaces; auto top-ups buy more credits when you hit zero. Enterprise is a custom contract.
- Limits
- Each plan caps simultaneous phone calls (raisable with an add-on); knowledge base imports have a per-plan limit; neither figure is published. Native handoff covers five help desks.
