What it is
Runway Gen-4.5 was released on December 1, 2025, and is still Runway's newest in-house video model. At launch it ranked first on Artificial Analysis's text-to-video board at 1,247 Elo on the scale used then, with gains in motion, physics and fine detail. Image-to-video arrived after launch, and the model has been on Runway's API since February 2026.
Runway's apps and API now offer many third-party models alongside Gen-4.5, including Seedance 2.5, Kling 3.0, Wan 3, Gemini Omni Flash and Nano Banana Pro. Gen-4.5 is one of two models on the API, with Aleph 2.0, that export ProRes, PNG sequences and 10-bit HDR.
Our review
Gen-4.5 is now a supporting act in Runway's own catalogue. It topped Artificial Analysis's text-to-video board at launch with 1,247 Elo, ahead of Veo 3 at 1,226, but the current board, which scores video with audio, lists no Runway model among its 30 entries; Wan 3.0 leads at 1,175 on the new scale. Runway's API model page mentions no audio for Gen-4.5, while most of the board's leaders generate sound.
Where it still earns its place is finishing. At $0.12 a second it matches Kling 2.5 Turbo Pro on Runway's API and costs well under Seedance 2.5 at 720p ($0.30). It is also one of only two API models that export ProRes or PNG sequences, for $0.05 a second extra, and 10-bit or HDR, for $0.20 extra or $0.40 above 4 megapixels. A ten-second 4K HDR clip therefore costs $5.20 rather than $1.20, which is still cheap next to a reshoot.
Buyers should read the terms before uploading client footage. Runway's Terms of Use say inputs and outputs 'may be used by the Company to train and improve its AI models' under a perpetual, irrevocable licence, and offer no opt-out; enterprise customers sign separate terms that are not public. Runway holds SOC 2 Type II and ISO/IEC 27001:2022, claims no ownership of outputs, and forbids using them to train competing models.
Runway's own launch post names the failure modes: effects that appear before their causes, objects that vanish once hidden, and actions that succeed when they should fail. API throughput is gated by spend, starting at one or two concurrent jobs and a $100 monthly cap, with 20 concurrent jobs only after $5,000 of purchases. For a studio already paying for Runway's editing tools, Gen-4.5 has become the house model for delivery formats, while first drafts increasingly go to Kling or Seedance inside the same app.
Where it earns its place
A post-production house delivering broadcast commercials
Generate inserts that drop straight into an HDR grade
Request 10-bit HDR or ProRes output from the API; a five-second 4K HDR insert costs $2.60 and needs no transcode. Negotiate enterprise terms first, because the standard terms allow Runway to train on uploaded client footage.
A backend engineer adding video to a marketing-automation product
Turn product images into short clips on demand
Call the image-to-video endpoint with gen4.5; jobs over the concurrency limit queue as THROTTLED rather than failing, and the rolling 24-hour cap returns 429. Tier 3, with five concurrent Gen-4.5 jobs and a $2,000 monthly cap, unlocks after $100 of purchases.
A three-person social video team on Runway Pro
Produce weekly short-form clips in one tool
Pro at $35 a month ($28 billed yearly) includes 2,250 credits, about 187 seconds of Gen-4.5. At four takes per usable shot that is under a minute of finished video, so most teams top up with 1,000-credit packs or draft on cheaper models.
Before you commit
- Setup
- Sign up in the web or mobile app and choose Gen-4.5 in the video tool, or create an API key and call model gen4.5; API credits are prepaid at $0.01 each.
- Integrations
- REST API with queued tasks; the same credits buy Kling, Seedance, Wan, Veo 3.1 and Gemini Omni Flash, so one integration reaches several model families. Custom Gen-4.5 models are available to organisations on request.
- Data and privacy
- Standard terms let Runway train on inputs and outputs under a perpetual licence with no opt-out; enterprise terms are separate and not public. SOC 2 Type II and ISO/IEC 27001:2022; retention periods are not published.
- Cost at scale
- API: 1,000 ten-second clips a month is $1,200 before retries, plus $500 for ProRes or $2,000 to $4,000 for HDR. In the app, Max at $76 a month billed yearly buys 9,500 credits, about 13 minutes of Gen-4.5.
- Limits
- Clip durations and resolutions for Gen-4.5 are not published on the API model page. API tiers run from 1–2 concurrent jobs and $100 a month to 20 concurrent and $100,000; Runway lists causality, object-permanence and success-bias errors.
What's good
- ProRes, PNG-sequence and 10-bit HDR export on the API
- Flat $0.12 a second for text or image input
- SOC 2 Type II and ISO/IEC 27001:2022
- Same app and credits cover Kling 3.0, Seedance 2.5 and Wan 3
What's not
- Absent from Artificial Analysis's current text-to-video board
- Standard terms allow training on inputs and outputs, with no opt-out
- HDR above 4 megapixels more than quadruples the per-second price
- New API accounts start at 1–2 concurrent jobs and $100 a month
Best for
Studios and post houses already on Runway that need generated shots delivered in ProRes or HDR.

Runway Gen-4.5: common questions
- Is Runway Gen-4.5 worth it?
- Gen-4.5's strongest remaining argument is HDR and ProRes export, and Runway's standard terms let it train on whatever you feed it. We rate it 3.8 out of 5.

- Free tier with 125 one-time credits; Standard $15/month ($12 yearly), Pro $35 ($28), Max $95 ($76). API: 12 credits ($0.12) per second, plus $0.05 for ProRes and $0.20 to $0.40 for HDR.
- What are the downsides of Runway Gen-4.5?
- Absent from Artificial Analysis's current text-to-video board; standard terms allow training on inputs and outputs, with no opt-out; hDR above 4 megapixels more than quadruples the per-second price; new API accounts start at 1–2 concurrent jobs and $100 a month.
