What is ChatGPT extension for Chrome?
The ChatGPT extension puts ChatGPT in a side panel of your browser and lets the ChatGPT desktop and web apps use your tabs. In Chat it reads the pages you have open; in Work, OpenAI's agent mode, it can take over tabs to send messages, fill in forms, download files and sort tabs into groups. It also brings your full ChatGPT history into the side panel.
OpenAI made it the replacement for its Atlas browser, which stopped working on 9 August 2026, and turned it into a browser agent on 15 October 2026. It works in Chrome, Edge, Brave, Opera and Vivaldi; side chat works in all of them except Opera.
The extension is free on every ChatGPT plan, from Free upwards. Controlling tabs runs through ChatGPT Work, which Free and Go users get only in the desktop app.

Is ChatGPT extension for Chrome worth it?
Plenty of computer work is just moving facts between tabs: three sofa listings to compare, a supplier form to fill from an email, a timesheet that wants the same numbers every Friday.
The ChatGPT extension lets ChatGPT do that in your own browser. In Chat it reads the tabs you point it at and answers with what is on them. In Work it takes over a tab, clicks, types, fills in forms, downloads files and groups a messy window of tabs by topic, while you keep using the tab in front of you. It works in Chrome, Edge, Brave, Opera and Vivaldi, and it costs nothing beyond your ChatGPT plan.
Permissions are more careful than the reach suggests. ChatGPT asks before it acts on each new website, with a choice of Allow once, Allow for this site, Allow for all sites or Decline, and you can keep lists of allowed and blocked domains. Allow for all sites and access to your browsing history are both marked Elevated Risk, and history access is approved one request at a time. The store listing says it always asks before using your history or downloading and uploading files.
The catch: whatever it reads goes to ChatGPT, and it acts with your logins, so a hidden instruction on a web page or a careless Allow for all sites can put Gmail, LinkedIn or your company's internal tools in play. Chrome asks it to approve access to data on all websites, history, downloads, tab groups and the debugger. OpenAI keeps no separate log of browser actions, only what ends up in the chat. The listing, at version 1.26.1102.11740 with about 9,000,000 users, averages 2.9 stars from 1.2K ratings, a weak score for a product this widely installed. Copycat extensions with ChatGPT in the name are common, so check that the listing says offered by OpenAI.
Our take: a separate browser profile with only the sites a task needs, plus Allow once as a habit, turns this from a risk into a useful pair of hands. Next to Claude in Chrome and Gemini in Chrome, its real advantage is that it is free on every ChatGPT plan and runs in five browsers rather than one.
Where it earns its place
A shopper comparing three sofas across retailer sites
See dimensions, materials, delivery times and return policies side by side
Open the three listings, mention them in Chat and ask for a comparison table. Reading tabs works on the Free plan, so it costs nothing.
An events coordinator at a 25-person agency
Register attendees on conference sites from an event brief
Work fills the registration form from the brief in another tab and stops before submitting when told to, so a person checks each entry. Allow once on each new site keeps it from wandering.
A procurement assistant at a 60-person manufacturer
Copy vendor details from supplier tabs into a comparison sheet
Work reads each supplier page and fills a spreadsheet tab; on Plus at $20 a month it runs from the web or the desktop app and draws on the shared Work and Codex allowance.
