ChatGPT Work turns a paid ChatGPT plan into a capable office assistant that finishes jobs rather than describing them, but its meter is hard to predict and it can reach far more of your computer than most jobs need.

What is ChatGPT Work?

ChatGPT Work is the agent mode of ChatGPT. You describe the result you want, and it gathers context from connected apps and files, breaks the goal into steps and returns a finished spreadsheet, slide deck, document or small web app. OpenAI launched it on 9 July 2026 on GPT-5.6; it now runs on the GPT-6 family.

It lives in the new ChatGPT desktop app for Mac and Windows, which merged the Codex app and puts Chat, Work and Codex side by side, and on the web and phone for paid plans. On the desktop it can use your local files and apps, a built-in browser and computer use, where it clicks and types on your screen. Tasks can be scheduled, and a task started on your phone keeps running in OpenAI's cloud.

Work shares its usage allowance and credits with Codex. Free and Go get a limited version in the desktop app only; Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu get it on web and desktop.

Is ChatGPT Work worth it?

The hard part of a weekly report is rarely the thinking. It is pulling numbers from three tools, pasting them into a sheet and rebuilding the same slides you built last Monday.

Work is OpenAI's answer to that. You describe the outcome, give it access to Slack, Google Drive, SharePoint, your calendar or a folder, and it plans the steps, shows its progress and hands back a finished file. It can stay on a project for hours, run on a schedule (OpenAI's example is a weekly summary of your Slack messages) and publish results as a small web app through Sites, still in public beta. You can approve important actions as it goes, and an automatic review step checks risky actions before they run.

It is built on Codex, and the two share one allowance. OpenAI's estimates for Plus and Business Standard are 5 to 45 messages every five hours on GPT-6 Astra, or 15 to 160 on GPT-6.1 Sol, with weekly limits that may also apply. Pro plans have no five-hour limit. For companies on credits, OpenAI's own planning figures from one week of use by first-time marketing adopters put the median at about $53 per employee a year, the average at $309 and the 90th percentile at $1,154.

The catch: Work is metered like an agent, not a chat. A long job with many tools draws down the allowance much faster than a question, and OpenAI calls its message counts estimates. The access is also broad. On the desktop, computer use can click and type in your apps and move files, and OpenAI's claim that its review layer blocked 100% of data-extraction attempts in its own red-teaming has not been checked by anyone else. Computer use will not approve operating-system security prompts, log in as an administrator or drive a terminal, and admins can switch it off, but on a personal plan the defaults are yours to manage. Local computer access with Work Cloud does not offer strict zero data retention, according to OpenAI's security docs.

Our take: next to Claude Cowork, Work does much the same job and reaches the same kinds of files; the deciding factor is which assistant your team already pays for. On a $20 Plus plan it is a good weekly helper, and anyone planning to run it for hours every day should budget for Pro or credits.

Where it earns its place

  • A sales operations manager at a 40-person software company

Turn the week's CRM changes and Slack threads into a pipeline review deck

A scheduled Monday task reads the connected CRM and Slack and drafts the slides before the meeting. Plus at $20 a month includes Work, but its estimate of 5 to 45 GPT-6 Astra messages per five hours is what pushes daily heavy users to Pro.

  • An analyst at a 15-person market research firm

Compare competitors' public pricing and build a sheet the client can open

Work uses its built-in browser to visit each site, pulls the figures into a spreadsheet and can publish a shareable dashboard through Sites, which is still in beta.

  • An IT lead at a 300-person company on ChatGPT Enterprise

Roll out an agent without unlimited spend or desktop control

Grant Work to a pilot group, set monthly credit limits per group and an overage cap, and disable computer use with the features.computer_use = false managed setting. OpenAI's median planning figure of about $53 per employee a year is a starting estimate, not a price.

Before you commit

Setup
Open the ChatGPT desktop app, choose ChatGPT from the menu and switch the toggle to Work; on Plus and above it is also on the web and phone. Computer use and local folders need extra permissions in settings.
Integrations
Plugins for Slack, Microsoft Teams, Google Drive, SharePoint, email, calendars, CRMs and project trackers, called with @ and the app's name; a built-in browser; Google Workspace and Microsoft 365 files; Codex for code.
Data and privacy
Follows your ChatGPT workspace's data rules: consumer chats can be used for training unless you opt out, while Business and Enterprise data is not used by default. Local computer access with Work Cloud does not provide strict zero data retention. Which AI tools train on your data?
Cost at scale
On Enterprise credits, OpenAI's planning example for 100 employees is about $30,900 a year, or $2,575 a month, based on one week of early use; Fast mode uses 2.5 times the included allowance.
Limits
Plus and Business Standard estimates are 5 to 45 GPT-6 Astra messages per five hours, and weekly limits may also apply. Computer use cannot approve OS security prompts, act as an administrator or automate terminals.

What’s good

  • Returns finished sheets, decks, docs and web apps rather than advice
  • Scheduled and phone-started tasks keep running in the cloud
  • Included in every ChatGPT plan, with a limited desktop version on Free
  • Admins can limit access, connectors, browser use, computer use and spend per user or group

What’s not

  • Shares an estimate-based allowance with Codex that long jobs drain quickly
  • Free and Go get it only in the desktop app, on GPT-6 Luna
  • Computer use can act across your apps and files
  • OpenAI's 100% block rate for data extraction is its own unverified figure
  • No strict zero data retention when local access runs through Work Cloud

Best for

Office workers and small teams already paying for ChatGPT who repeat the same research, spreadsheet and slide jobs every week.
