What it is
LlamaParse is LlamaIndex's hosted service for turning PDFs, Office files and other documents into Markdown and structured data for AI applications. In February 2026 LlamaIndex renamed its whole LlamaCloud platform to LlamaParse; it now covers Parse, Extract (structured fields to your schema), Classify, Split and Index (managed retrieval).
Since the v2 release in December 2025 you pick one of four parse tiers rather than tuning models and modes: Fast (1 credit per page, plain spatial text with no Markdown), Cost Effective (3), Agentic (10) and Agentic Plus (45). You can pin a dated parser version so production output stays stable. A credit costs $1.25 per 1,000, so Agentic parsing works out at $12.50 per 1,000 pages.
Plans are Free (10,000 credits a month), Starter ($50 a month, 40,000 credits), Pro ($500 a month, 400,000 credits) and Enterprise.
Our review
LlamaParse's strongest argument is price at a given quality. The tier system is easy to reason about: start at Cost Effective for $3.75 per 1,000 pages and move to Agentic ($12.50) or Agentic Plus ($56.25) only for the documents that need vision-model parsing. Re-parsing the same file within 48 hours is free, and you can restrict a job to target pages.
Quality evidence is informal. In April 2026 Kanopy Labs, a development agency, reported LlamaParse at 89% on table structure against 83% for Docling and 71% for Unstructured, with Docling ahead on reading order (94% to 91%) and retrieval recall, but it does not publish its test set or how answers were scored.
Plan ceilings matter more than the headline rate. Starter at $50 a month allows pay-as-you-go only up to 400,000 credits and Pro at $500 up to $5,000 a month, with 5 and 20 concurrent jobs respectively. A million Cost Effective pages a month fits inside Pro for about $3,750; a million Agentic pages needs 10 million credits and an Enterprise contract. Kanopy Labs also reports per-page latency of 3 to 8 seconds off-peak and up to 45 seconds at peak times.
The data terms are better than many hosted parsers, with one catch. Uploaded files and the parse cache are deleted after 48 hours, a do-not-cache flag skips even that, and LlamaIndex says it holds zero-retention, no-training agreements with the LLM providers behind the service. Customer data is not used for training by default, but an organisation admin can opt in to a data-sharing programme that allows it, a switch worth auditing. SOC 2 Type II, HIPAA and GDPR are listed, an EU region exists, and private VPC deployment is reserved for Enterprise, which is where regulated teams will end up comparing it with running Docling themselves.
Where it earns its place
A two-person team building RAG over 20,000 pages of product manuals a month
Turn PDFs with tables into clean Markdown for retrieval
Cost Effective at 3 credits a page uses 60,000 credits, so Starter at $50 plus about $25 of pay-as-you-go covers it. Pin a parser version so chunks stay stable between re-indexes.
A finance operations lead processing supplier invoices
Extract totals, dates and line items into a fixed schema
Extract at the Cost Effective tier costs 8 credits a page, about $10 per 1,000 invoices; Agentic extraction at 25 credits a page is worth it for scanned or messy layouts. Spot-check totals, since an extraction error costs more than the parse.
A platform engineer at an EU insurer
Parse claims documents without moving data out of the EU
Use the EU region (cloud.eu.llamaindex.ai) and set the do-not-cache flag; confirm that no admin has opted in to data-sharing. If documents may not leave the company's own cloud, only Enterprise VPC deployment works.
Before you commit
- Setup
- Create an API key and call the Python or TypeScript SDK or the REST API; a first parse runs in minutes on the free 10,000 credits.
- Integrations
- Native in LlamaIndex; standalone REST API and SDKs for other stacks; Extract, Classify, Split and Index share the same credits.
- Data and privacy
- Uploaded files and the parse cache are deleted after 48 hours; indexed data is kept for the contract term. No training by default unless an admin opts in; SOC 2 Type II, HIPAA, GDPR; VPC on Enterprise.
- Cost at scale
- One million pages a month costs about $3,750 at Cost Effective on Pro; the same volume at Agentic is $12,500 and exceeds Pro's $5,000 pay-as-you-go cap.
- Limits
- Concurrent jobs: 5 on Free and Starter, 20 on Pro, 100 on Enterprise; stored files cost 0.1 credit per MB per day.
What's good
- Clear per-page tiers from $1.25 to $56.25 per 1,000 pages
- Led an agency comparison on table parsing
- Source files deleted after 48 hours; caching can be turned off
- SOC 2 Type II, HIPAA and GDPR, with an EU region
- Parse, extract, classify and index on one bill
What's not
- Cloud-only below Enterprise; VPC deployment needs a contract
- Pay-as-you-go capped at $5,000 a month on Pro
- Latency depends on queue load
- Admins can opt the organisation in to training data-sharing
Best for
Teams parsing large volumes of mixed PDFs for RAG who want low, predictable per-page costs.
Alternatives
LlamaParse: common questions
- Is LlamaParse worth it?
- Cheap, predictable per-page parsing for RAG pipelines, as long as your documents are allowed to visit someone else's cloud. We rate it 4.2 out of 5.
- How much does LlamaParse cost?
- Free 10K credits/month; Starter $50/month (40K credits); Pro $500/month (400K credits). $1.25 per 1,000 credits; parsing 1 to 45 credits per page by tier.
- What are the downsides of LlamaParse?
- Cloud-only below Enterprise; VPC deployment needs a contract; pay-as-you-go capped at $5,000 a month on Pro; latency depends on queue load; admins can opt the organisation in to training data-sharing.
- Who is LlamaParse best for?
- Teams parsing large volumes of mixed PDFs for RAG who want low, predictable per-page costs.
- How much does LlamaParse cost for a team or in production?
- One million pages a month costs about $3,750 at Cost Effective on Pro; the same volume at Agentic is $12,500 and exceeds Pro's $5,000 pay-as-you-go cap.
- Is LlamaParse safe for company data?
- Uploaded files and the parse cache are deleted after 48 hours; indexed data is kept for the contract term. No training by default unless an admin opts in; SOC 2 Type II, HIPAA, GDPR; VPC on Enterprise.
