Our rating

4.0/5

OpusClip gives you a usable first cut for about ten cents per source minute, but a person still has to choose the clips, and its privacy policy does not rule out using your footage to improve its models.

What it is

OpusClip takes a long video, such as a podcast, webinar, stream or YouTube video, finds the moments it judges most engaging and cuts them into short clips for TikTok, Reels and Shorts. It reframes to vertical while tracking speakers, adds animated captions with emoji and keyword highlights, writes titles and hashtags, and gives each clip a 'virality score'.

Billing is by source minute: one credit is one minute of uploaded video processed, however many clips come back. According to the help centre, Free includes 60 minutes a month, Starter 150 and Pro 300 (3,600 a year on annual billing); the pricing page itself does not show these numbers. Pro adds AI B-roll, dubbing, eye-contact correction, brand templates, export to Premiere Pro and DaVinci Resolve, a scheduler, an API and an MCP connector.

The free plan exports watermarked vertical clips only, and its media expires after three days.

Our review

OpusClip is best understood as a meter on your raw footage. Each credit is one minute of uploaded video, so a 60-minute podcast costs 60 credits whether it yields three clips or fifteen. Starter's 150 minutes for $15 and Pro's 300 for $29 both work out at roughly ten cents a minute. Those allowances appear in the help centre, not on the pricing page, which is why so many buyers think the plans are vaguer than they are.

The weak link is judgement. Users on Reddit and review sites report clips that start mid-sentence, end before the punchline or miss the moment a human editor would have picked. The virality score is a ranking aid with no published method behind it. Expect to review every clip and trim a share of them, which is still far quicker than scrubbing a 90-minute recording from scratch.

The API is more serious than most clipping tools offer, but on Pro it is labelled beta. It allows 15 hours of API video a month, 4 projects running at once and 30 requests a minute per key, and each API project costs at least 10 credits. Business raises concurrency to 50. Projects expire after 30 days unless auto-save is on, so a pipeline has to download what it wants to keep.

On data, the trust portal lists SOC 2 Type 2 and SOC 3, and the service runs on Google Cloud in the US. The privacy policy lets uploaded video be used to improve the product, and the only opt-out it describes from AI research and model development is for EU and EEA users, by email. For a brand clipping unreleased interviews, that clause deserves more attention than the virality score.

Where it earns its place

  • A two-person team publishing one 90-minute podcast episode a week

Turn each episode into a week of Shorts and Reels

Four episodes use about 360 credits a month, more than Pro's 300, so the team needs one extra Pro pack (300 more credits and 2 more seats). Every clip still gets a human pass for awkward starts and endings.

  • A developer at a video agency handling 20 client channels

Clip new uploads automatically and post them on a schedule

The API creates a project per video, returns clips by webhook and can schedule posts. On Pro it is capped at 15 hours a month, 4 concurrent projects and 30 requests a minute, and each project costs at least 10 credits; more than that needs Business.

  • The marketing manager at a 50-person B2B software company

Repurpose a monthly hour-long webinar for LinkedIn and YouTube

Starter's 150 minutes at $15 a month covers two webinars without a watermark, but only in 9:16. Square and landscape clips for LinkedIn need Pro at $29.
